Easter Sunday in Salzburg
We attended Easter Mass at the Cathedral in Salzburg.

More from Salzburg....
Saturday we started the day off with a walking tour around the city.......
This street is known as Getreidegasse, and it's famous for it's old wrought-iron signs.
Up Close....
Even McDonalds has a pretty sign.
A shop filled with beautifully decorated Easter eggs!
The famous guy from Salzburg! ;)
The Cathedral.

An interesting illusion, as you approach the cathedral. The statue of Mary is in the foreground, but there is a golden crown on the exterior facade of the church. As you approach the cathedral, it appears that the crown is actually on Mary's head.

St. Peter's Cemetery. The cemetery in The Sound of Music was a Hollywood set, but modeled after this one.

Salzburg, Austria after the Bike Tour
We spent the rest of Friday and exploring Salzburg.
This picture was actually taken on the bike tour, but not necessarily Sound of Music related. Just a gorgeous view.
Revisiting the Mirabell Gardens. Those are my two hooded lovelies in the background. It was raining....again.

Fraulein Maria's Bike Tour - Sound of Music
We finally made it to Salzburg, got settled into our hotel, and headed out to dinner at Augustiner Braustubl, a huge 1000-seat beer garden within a monk run brewery.
Gotta fuel up for our big bike ride scheduled for the morning!!
We did the Sound of Music bike tour Friday morning.
Grace and Matt rode tandem...
And I pulled Audrey in a trailer...
It was probably the best part of the entire trip! I think the girls even enjoyed it. But there were two hills ... the first one I attempted, and only made it a quarter of the way up before I had to get off and walk. The second hill....the tour guide swapped bikes with me, and even he had to walk part of the way up.
Basically you hit all the big sites from the movie. But it was also a nice way to get oriented to Salzburg.
Every time we went by this fountain, there was a group singing Do Re Mi. Sometimes, like below, multiple groups....
We couldn't go inside, but this is the theater where the family performed in the festival. It is still used today.
In the beginning of the movie, Maria runs by this fountain singing, and splashes the water at the horse....
The gate of the Abbey. A real Abbey. Also still in use today.
The back of the Von Trapp house.
The front of the house. And now we notice that they didn't use the same house when filming different scenes....
And the gazebo.....which they've had to lock because one too many people have injured themselves re-enacting jumping from bench to bench singing 'I am 15, going on 16'.
It was a fantastic tour, highly recommend!

Berchtesgaden, Germany
After leaving Hallstatt, we headed towards Salzburg. On the way, we passed beautiful mountains topped with snow.
We decided to make a detour from Salzburg and head to Bechtesgaden because the weather was the best we'd had all week, and the forecast for the next few days wasn't looking so great.
This is the road we had to take to climb the mountain....
No, that's not a sidewalk. That's the road, and one of the better parts. There were a few areas that were dirt paths, one lane, on the side of a mountain. It was a little scary.
This is what we were heading towards....
Hitler's Eagles Nest. Unfortunately, the road to get up the rest of the way is closed until mid-May each year. So we had to settle for a tour of what remains of the underground bunkers still intact after the war.
I don't have many pictures, but it is kind of mind blowing how much work went into creating this underground city. I thought a bunker was an underground shelter, like a one room place. This place was massive.

It was interesting. Really highlighted the insanity behind the Third Reich.
Once we were outside, we enjoyed some much needed sunshine and practiced our best Julie Andrews' moves as we prepared to head to Salzburg.

Hallstatt, Austria - By Day
The sun will come out tomorrow, bet your bottom dollar, tomorrow......there'll be sun!

Paid a visit to the Bone Chapel behind the Catholic Church..
Space was so limited in the tiny cemetery pictured below, that people were only buried for 12 years before they were dug up. Some of the bones made it to the Bone Chapel, where each skull is named, dated and decorated. They stopped this practice in the 60s.
